MĀ TE KAHUKURA
KA RERE TE MANU,
KA RERE RUNGA RAWA

ADORN THIS BIRD WITH FEATHERS AND LET HER FLY, LET HER SOAR

The Kāhu is a majestic bird that holds significant importance and meaning to the rohe we represent. Renowned for its Chief like qualities, the Kāhu represents mana, empowerment, independence and guidance.

A bird of prey with feathers that are often prized in the making of korowai. Giving those who adorn this beautiful piece of kākahu, a sense of pride and a belief that anything is possible.

Using the thermal currents jetting upwards (represented by the koru motif) from the Waitematā our Kāhu hangs high in the sky. Her head silhouetted against the northern sun, she listens, she watches, she waits for the perfect time to unleash her full power.

We are the Northern Kāhu, and we represent our region (Auckland and Northland) with pride. We carry the Kāhu name with humility and respect, recognising that it is an honour to have the blessing of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, tangata whenua of Tāmaki Makaurau, for our Kaupapa.

Our    why

KĀHU_Mark-PRIMARY-RGB (2).png

Our organisation is built around the simple idea that basketball is more than a game. That the qualities and attributes required to find success on court also support success in life. As such, we believe it is our responsibility to help others through our game.

We exist to help young women to thrive and excel through basketball, allowing them to showcase their talents as professional athletes and find success. We will also inspire the next generation of female basketball players and grow junior participation.

Our basketball journey starts with a young girl being introduced to the game. She plays because she enjoys spending time with her friends, it is fun! Over time her skills develop, she finds expression on the court, develops discipline, and allows herself to dream.

As she continues in the game, she experiences the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. However, her worth is in neither winning nor losing, it comes from hard work, perspiration, and hustle. She is powerful because she understands who she is, knows what it means to be a part of a team, and has followed her heart on a pathway to success on the court, and in life.

Founded in 2022, the Northern Kāhu is a women’s semi-professional basketball team and competes
in the GJ Gardner Homes Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa competition.

The team is owned by Northern Kāhu Limited, a partnership between Harbour Basketball  (NZs largest and most successful basketball association) and the Dil Family (long-time supporters of the game) and is one of five inaugural franchises selected by Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) to participate in Tauihi Basketball.

Our team excels at the highest level. Our games are exciting. We play to win!
