Tera Reed

Akiene-Tera Reed has re-signed for Northern Kāhu for the 2023 Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa season. Reed played 10 games for the Kāhu in 2022 averaging 10.4 points and a team high 6.3 rebounds while shooting 40% (10/25) from beyond the 3-point arc.

“I’m excited to be back,” exclaimed Reed.

“Obviously it was a tough end to the season last year and returning this year my main goal is to win the championship. I’m happy to be back  with Jody and the girls.”

“I think the level of competition last year was good in the first season and with imports coming in there was a lot of high level talent. I expect this year will be just as good or even better.”

Following Tauihi ’22 the 184cm wing played the 2022-23 European season in Finland averaging 20.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game for the Pyrinto club.

In a remarkable game in February Tera scored 48 points for Pyrinto in a 96-82 win against FOA. Though no records exist it is thought to be the highest individual score by a Kiwi in a women’s professional game.

“It was a crazy game when everything just went in” mused Tera.

Tera admitted she only found out in the last minute how many points she had scored before almost making it a 50-point game.

“In the last minute I had a layup and it just rolled around the rim and out!”

Tera believes the experience she gained in Finland has served to enhance her game.

“It was such a good experience, playing with good people and a good team – shout out to the Pyrinto club.”

Her good form in Finland certainly attracted the attention of the New Zealand coaching staff with Tera selected for the Tall Ferns tour of Europe in early June. She played all five games on tour and in the win against Poland led all scorers with 24 points – also her highest score on the international stage.

A veteran of 135 NCAA Division I games the Tall Ferns wing is fifth on the all-time list of games played by a Kiwi woman in Division I hoops. She also amassed 1,624 points, just 24 points shy of eclipsing Erin Rooney’s all-time NZ record of 1,647 points.

Her collegiate career began at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

She led the VCU scoring three seasons running, the rangy wing a key player as VCU won an Atlantic 10 Championship, and with it a berth at the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21.

Reed played her fifth and final college season at the University of Southern California Trojans under former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Lindsay Gottlieb.
